How to learn Malayalam grammar | Adjective | Naamavisheshanam

An adjective is a term that describes a noun or a pronoun. Learning adjective is very important to communicate effectively in Malayalam or any other language. 

In today's session, we are going to learn some adjective forms in the Malayalam language. There are seven adjective forms in Malayalam grammar, they are,

1. Suddham | ശുദ്ധം 
2. Sarvvanaamikam | സർവ്വനാമികം
3. Saankhyam | സാംഖ്യം
4. Paarimaanikam | പാരിമാണികം
5. Vibhaavakam | വിഭാവകം
6. Naamaamgajam | നാമാംഗജം
7. Kriyaamgajam | ക്രിയാംഗജം

literally, we are discussing the exact grammatical nomenclature in Malayalam grammar. so it's obvious that you may find these words unfamiliar unless you are a Malayali. Anyway, don't worry about it even I felt those words alien to me when I was researching this topic. So let's see what are these adjective forms are.

1. Suddham | ശുദ്ധം 

Suddham is similar to the natural adjective in English, which often describes the natural quality/trait of a noun

For example; 

• small beans= cherupayar ചെറുപയർ (cheriya+payar)
• sweet potato= madhurakizhang മധുരകിഴങ്ങ് (madhuramulla+kizhangu)
• red onion= chuvannulli  ചുവന്നുള്ളി (chuvanna+ulli)
• blue sky= neelaakaasham നീലാകാശം (neela+aakaasham)
• green leaf= pachila പച്ചില (pacha+ila)

cheriya ചെറിയ = small payar പയർ = beans madhuramulla മധുരമുള്ള = sweet kizhag കിഴങ്ങ് = potato,tapioca  chuvanna ചുവന്ന = red neela നീല = blue aakaasham ആകാശം = sky pacha പച്ച = green ila ഇല = leaf

2. Sarvvanaamikam | സർവ്വനാമികം

In English, it is called a Demonstrative adjective. Here the pronoun itself becomes a Sarvvanaamikam or Demonstrative adjective. 

Example;

• That place = aa sthalam ആ സ്ഥലം
• which book = ethu pusthakam ഏത് പുസ്തകം
• other animals = mattu mrigangal മറ്റു മൃഗങ്ങൾ
• any human = valla manushyanum വല്ല മനുഷ്യനും
• many creature = pala jeevikal പല ജീവികൾ
• some days = chila divasngal ചില ദിവസങ്ങൾ
• most stores = mikka kadakalum മിക്ക കടകളും
• every week = ellaa aazhchayum എല്ലാ ആഴ്ചയും

aa ആ = that sthalam സ്ഥലം = place  ethu ഏത് = which  pusthakam പുസ്തകം = book mattu മറ്റ് = other valla വല്ല = any pala പല = many chila ചില = some mikka മിക്ക = most ella എല്ലാ = every

 3. Saankhyam | സാംഖ്യം

Sankhya means number. Here the adjective occupies in the numerical form

Example;

• a child = oru kutty ഒരു കുട്ടി
• two books = randu pusthakangal രണ്ട് പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ
• six pen = aaru penakal ആറ് പേനകൾ

4. Paarimaanikam | പാരിമാണികം

In English, this adjective is called a Quantitative adjective. The word Paarimaanikam means quantity or measurement. simply this adjective represents the quantity or measurement of a noun. 

Example;

• how far = ethra dhooram എത്ര ദൂരം
• how much rupees = ethra roopa എത്ര രൂപ
• how many books = ethra pusthakangal എത്ര പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ
• how many = ethra ennam എണ്ണം

5. Vibhaavakam | വിഭാവകം

In English, this adjective is called a Descriptive adjective. it denotes the traits/characteristics of a noun or an object.

Example;

• Handsome boy = sundharanaaya Baalan സുന്ദരനായ ബാലൻ
• Pretty girl = sundhariyaaya Penkutty സുന്ദരിയായ പെൺകുട്ടി
• Tall building = uyaramulla kettidam ഉയരമുള്ള കെട്ടിടം
• Beautifully expressed = bhangiyaayi prathipaadhichu ഭംഗിയായി പ്രതിപാദിച്ചു
• Rising sun = udhikkunna sooryan ഉദിക്കുന്ന സൂര്യൻ
• Jumping horse = chaadunna kuthira ചാടുന്ന കുതിര

6. Naamaamgajam | നാമാംഗജം

Here the verb that comes next to the noun act as an adjective.

Example;

• Running vehicle = oodunna vandi ഓടുന്ന വണ്ടി
• Laughing kid = chirikkunna kutty ചിരിക്കുന്ന കുട്ടി
• Singing bird = paadunna pakshi പാടുന്ന പക്ഷി
• Blooming flower = vidarunna poovu വിടരുന്ന പൂവ്
•  Barking dog = kuraikkunna patti കുരയ്ക്കുന്ന പട്ടി

7. Kriyaamgajam | ക്രിയാംഗജം

Here the incomplete verb that comes next to a complete verb acts as an adjective.

Example;

Went to play = kalikkaan poyi കളിക്കാൻ പോയി
Go slowly = pathukke poku പതുക്കെ പോകു
Walk fast = vegam nadakku വേഗം നടക്ക്
Say it loud = urakke parayu ഉറക്കെ പറയ്
